To owns a prime lens is easy, but to choose one, is not! There are many type of focal length been built for us out there. It always varies in short range, mid range and lastly long range. Choosing a prime lens is not an easy task as long as we know what or which is more suitable for our daily need. Like my self, I consider my self as a casual street snapper. Thus a short-to-mid-range is the most ideal focal length for me. I used to had the wonderful little Lumix 14mm f/2.5 pancake before when I was still using the Olympus E-P2 but got it all sold off when I jump ship to Sony DSLT. It was a wonderful lens...and wide enough for everything :) Sharp even wide open and very very ideal for scenery shots and also indoor events, e.g, Motorshow where lighting is tricky (although mostly are sufficient).
This round, I've decided to try something else. Something, that is longer than the typical wide focal length like the 14mm. Since Sigma has built 3 prime lens recently for the MFT, I've decided to give the 3rd party a try. Sigma offers 3 focal length in its line up, the 19mm, 30mm and the 60mm. At 1st I wanted the 19mm due to its wider length but then due to the availability for MFT, I managed to found the 30mm that people is letting go at the forum. I was skeptical about the focal length (60mm for 35equi.) so I tried to shoot around with my Lumix kit lens set at 30mm (29-31mm plus minus around there) and I think 30mm isn't so bad. Not as wide as 14mm (of course! duh!) but good enough for some candid shots where I don't need to walk so near to the subject.
Guess luck is on my side, managed to secured the deal and got my self the 30mm priced at MYR500. Condition is as good as new and it came with pouch. Size wise, it's thicker than my previous Lumix pancake but weight is about the same (very light!). The moment I hold it, it "frightened" me due to its 'shaky' internal...I thought it was a "defect" unit because I never realize this 'shaky internal' during the test. But once I switch ON the camera, the internal 'lock up' and things gone sturdy. Without a 2nd thought, I took it for some spin. And the end result, it was a very very nice lens! Sharpness is good, or shall I say excellent as reviewed by ePhotozine's fella. Since it's a bright day, I set the ISO all the way to 200 and use only the Aperture Mode at 2.8. Here are the samples....cheers!
