Canon 30D, the ancient shooter from 2006.
When I write this little article, the year is already mid of 2013, everything seems so advance and high tech now even camera with a smaller sensor are able to produce great image quality. The same with all the smartphones, it has getting greater and better every now and then, just pick a simple smartphone, you can easily find a 5megapixel camera module with it and yes, they are capable to capture good image quality especially in good lighting environment.
But all these gimmick and 'marketing' strategy has never really strike my interest and I ain't buying it. Based on my experience in imaging world, outdated platform/system doesn't mean "bad". In fact, they do snap and handle better than some of the modern days DSLR out there!
After owning several platforms my self, my last journey ended up with Sony DSLT (a57) system. They are fantastic, really. They are speedy, produce great end result, clean image on higher ISO (800-3200) and best of all, whole range of Minolta A-Mount lenses are compatible with them...not to mention they are as sharp as modern lenses and is cheaper too!
Some of my friends were curious what's made me get my self another camera body while I've got something great in hand. Because recently I've involved in quite some numbers of events and outing, so something has struck my mind that I need to get myself a 2nd body in case my Sony DSLT breaks down. Since I've owned several platforms before, my instinct has told me to get back a Canon, yeah, Canon...doesn't matter even it's an older model. So I search around, dig around, compare, read all the available resources from other users...I've made a decision to end up with 30D. No doubt, at 1st I was eying on 40D for its greater hardware and newer platform, but because of budget constrain, it has led me to the alternative...30D. Overall, this 30D is a step lower than the great 40D according to spec sheet, but no more until it reaches my hand.
I'm astonished by how good this little old system can perform! The 30D is indeed quite a responsive one, and the image quality was very good, yeah! Since I got it for only USD$180 or MYR530.00 (body only from a local seller), I borrowed a lens from a friend of mine, the cheap 'nifty-fifty' 50mm 1.8 II for a quick test run. Well, after taken a few shots with it and upload 'em into my Macbook and previewed them...gosh, they were STUNNING ! Yes, stunning result on both low and high ISO as claimed and reviewed by many users out there! Truly love how it handle all the noise on ISO 1600 and 3200. It's grainy, but not smudged off, thus the detail still can be seen very clearly. It has got a very film like kinda feels with it.
No doubt, 30D is from the yesterday's technology (2006), and it's an old ones. Compare to newer modern bodies, 30D has got nothing much to impress, but I never regret of what I've purchased. As for the cosmetic wise, there were minor wear & tear but overall still looks good for an item at this age. I'm afraid this 30D may become my primary body instead of my Sony DSLT in certain condition due to its very good quality output. For those who're in low budget and wanted a good quality DSLR and their preferred brand is Canon, this 30D is worth to look at. It won't burn your pocket and with the balance left, you can always go for a better lens and some accessories like Speedlite, battery grip and more :)
This is my review and opinion so far on this 30D, happy photography!
Cheers!
