A sharp shooter...
I used to preferred and uses my Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 a lot those days before I encountered with this little 'sharp shooter'. Don't be confuse or turn down by my words, these both lenses perform very well and very sharp, but the Nikon 40mm f/2.8G is sharper wide open. In fact, it is also sharp than my Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D too! Another obvious winning side of this 40mm f/2.8G over my 35mm and 50mm is the Micro ability. With this lens, I've got no hassle nor issue nor difficulties shooting any object at any distance.
As for the focal length, I don't mind for that narrower extra 5mm difference because I can always step a few step backward if I needed to or else forward, that is how we deal with prime lenses, agree? Nikon 35mm f/1.8G strength is very sharp in the center wide open, giving more opportunities to shoot in low-light situations. Therefore, for those who shoot a lot in low light situation while also preferred wider angle, the 35mm is always the best choice. If you are into photographing details and macro, occasionally taking pictures of people/objects/scenery, the Nikon 40mm f/2.8G DX Micro is a brilliant choice.
But of course, in the end of the day, it's up to your own preferences because photography is limitless and be it sharp or soft at wide open, it's all beautiful at its own way :) Below are some quick shots for you all to judge the end result of Nikon 40mm f/2.8G :) cheers!
